I remember some of these ads...
I was five years old when this "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" ad was on. I remember that the scene of the animals fleeing the fire scared the crap out of me; watching it now, it still resonates all these years later, with the small, tender animals afraid for their lives and running from the wall of licking, roaring flame. Slick Disney manipulation or not, even in black and white, it was powerful to me, and made a deep impression about human responsibility to prevent forest fires. At five, I got the message and it stayed with me.
And the jingle from "Buckle Up For Safety" is one that I still hear in my head from time to time. It's a trip watching/hearing it again. My stepdad was strict about making us all buckle up in the car. He was really ahead of his time with that; he even got seatbelts put in his vintage cars from the 50s and early 60s. (These are cars he later bought in the 70s.)
Four stars for this effort from me, because it was such a great time-capsule unearthed here to tell me about my early years, even if it's probably just old, grainy crap to people who didn't live in those times. Those old PSAs were often really well done, and of course I still remember "Cross At the Green, and Not In Between", another frequent PSA at the time. (I live in a city neighborhood where no one has received this message. People of all ages just wander out into the street. It still shocks me that people don't know you're supposed to cross at the light...how many years has it been since the cities enforced jaywalking laws? When did they stop doing this? Probably around the time the earth cracked open and everyone suddenly started openly selling the fireworks that had been totally illegal to sell when I was a kid?)
Seeing the Green Cross emblem reminded me that I hadn't seen one of those on a PSA in years. Yeah, I'm old now, I guess. I'm nostalgic for the dead rules of 50s/60s Kodachrome living.
